August Wilson New Voices

Formerly the August Wilson Monologue Competition, August Wilson New Voices is a national performance and design program for high school students. Currently in its nineteenth year, the annual program celebrates the playwright’s enduring legacy and aims to ignite and cultivate a passion for storytelling in the next generation of young artists. In 2023, longtime partner organizations August Wilson Legacy, LLC and Goodman Theatre revamped and expanded the program; a key objective of the rebrand was developing a visual identity for New Voices that could be broadly adapted and used by participating cities and theaters. This project was part of my in-house work at the Goodman, undertaken in close collaboration with National Competition Director Derrick Sanders and costume designer Constanza Romero, August Wilson’s widow.

Above, selections from the early deck of legacy-focused mockups.

When I was brought in, the program was still being referred to as the “August Wilson Legacy Project.” Our initial discussions centered on August and his 10-play American Century Cycle, and so my first proposals were muted, retrospective, and focused strongly on the idea of “legacy.” Once the name August Wilson New Voices was solidified, it quickly became clear that our approach instead needed to feel fresh, forward-thinking, and vibrant.

Above are selections from a subsequent set of mockups; Option 2 ended up being the direction we moved forward with. By this point I had shifted most of the visual weight from August’s name to New Voices, emphasizing the program participants and their storytelling. At the same time, everyone agreed that August’s signature, a sort of “stamp of approval,” was integral to the logo, so I was provided with a clean and legible version to work with. We also agreed that it would be advantageous to develop an alternate logo with the name/program hierarchy flipped.

Above are the final collection of logo assets and the final color palette, displayed for use over both dark and light backgrounds. This system is designed to be flexible and easy to expand: either component of the title can take precedence or be removed if needed, and new competition subtitles can be added over time as the program grows. Every part of the logos convey energy and momentum—from the penstrokes of August’s signature, to the bold and playful letterforms, to the vibrant palette—but at the same time there is a grounded sense of stability and balance. A new generation of storytellers building upon one man’s indelible legacy.

Finally, a selection of sample images at various dimensions for use online. My goal here was to provide a simple photo treatment and color overlay that could be replicated by folks without a design background and using free or low-cost software. Goodman Theatre conducted the rebrand, but the assets are available to all participating theaters and schools across the country; the photos are intended to be replaced by each host organization, to feature their own students and spotlight new faces every year.
